You may have seen our DTE crews in Southfield on 8 Mile and Telegraph repairing an overhead line. They determined that overgrown trees damaged the wire. After the crew made sure that the line was de-energized, tree trimmers cleared off the overgrown branches. This allowed the overhead crew to safely cut off the damaged section of wire and install new wire in its place, restoring the overhead line to normal operating order. This work decreases the likelihood of power outages caused by inclement weather, keeping homes and businesses in power when they need it.

In late 2021, DTE made a $90 million investment to accelerate its tree trimming efforts across the communities it serves to prevent outages during heavy storms. You can read more about that initiative here. Highlights include:

  • Accelerating tree trimming work for the communities hardest hit by recent storms last fall
  • Providing additional funds to our ongoing tree trimming program, resulting in an additional 3,500 line miles of trees trimmed. We have already trimmed 20,000 miles more aggressively, which is almost one time around the world!
  • Increasing our tree trim workforce by 30%
