This past week, one of our crews arrived at their work location in Detroit to replace a utility pole when they noticed an injured woodpecker stuck to a cable wire. Chad Cratsenburg, a DTE apprentice line worker, quickly climbed the pole and saved the bird.

“The bird was stuck to a phone cable line, which wasn’t what we were working on, but we had to jump in and help save its life,” Chad said.

The crew immediately noticed the bird had a sticky substance all over its beak, legs, and wings and knew it needed treatment. They called several different wildlife rehabilitation centers until they found a wildlife transportation company that picked up the woodpecker and took it to the Bird Center of Michigan in Saline for treatment.

Thank you to Chad and the rest of the crew for this gracious act!

You may see more of our crews in the coming months as part of our accelerated electric reliability projects in your area, including more tree trimming and infrastructure updates. All these projects are underway to improve your service and reliability for the short- and long-term.
