Community Empowerment Award funding expands farm operations and creates more opportunities for formerly incarcerated individuals to rebuild their lives.
The DTE Foundation is proud to partner with We the People Opportunity Farm (WTPOF), an organization dedicated to reconnecting formerly incarcerated individuals with their communities through growth, healing, and sustainable employment. Rooted in the belief that agriculture is a powerful tool for rehabilitation and community building, WTPOF empowers participants to rebuild their lives and reduce recidivism—one seed at a time.
Their mission is simple yet profound: Change the soil. Give a second chance. Reduce the recidivism rate in Washtenaw County. By combining farming with mentorship and structure, WTPOF provides justice-impacted men and women with healing, purpose, and pathways to employment.

The Community Empowerment grant is helping WTPOF take this work to the next level. Specifically, our support will:
- Double the size of the farm operation
- Expand annual internship cohorts from 6 to 10 individuals
- Increase year-round food distribution and community engagement events
This expansion means more opportunities for paid internships and reentry support programs—giving participants the tools they need to thrive while promoting food security and strengthening community connections.
Together, we’re not just growing crops—we’re growing hope, resilience, and opportunity for those who need it most.
“At the DTE Foundation, we believe in creating opportunities that change lives,” said Rodney Cole, president, DTE Foundation. “Our partnership with We the People Opportunity Farm is about more than growing food—it’s about growing hope and second chances. By expanding their farm and internship program, we’re helping justice-impacted individuals build skills, find stability, and reconnect with their communities. Every seed planted represents a new beginning, and we’re proud to be part of that transformation.”
