Community Empowerment Award funding will restore a key community pathway and spark new energy for neighborhood projects and art initiatives.
The DTE Foundation is excited to partner with the Belknap neighborhood in revitalizing a beloved community landmark—the Bradford Stairs. These stairs are an integral pathway connecting two active sections of the neighborhood, including the area that houses the community garden. Over the years, the stairs have become overgrown and distressed, but thanks to the Community Empowerment Award, they’ll soon be restored to their former glory.
This project is about more than fixing stairs—it’s about reconnecting neighbors and creating spaces that foster pride and belonging. The Bradford Stairs lead to the community garden, which has plans for an added pavilion and vegetable share stand this coming spring. Together, these improvements will create a vibrant hub for gathering, gardening, and sharing resources.
The Belknap neighborhood has two major stairways. One leads up to Lookout Park and gets plenty of attention as a city-facing landmark. The Bradford Stairs, however, are tucked into the heart of the neighborhood and represent the everyday life of the people who live here. This partnership with the DTE Foundation is shining a spotlight on this hidden gem and generating excitement among residents eager to see their community come back to life.
While planning is still underway with the city to address structural needs, the Bradford Stairs revitalization is just the beginning. The Neighbors of Belknap Lookout, along with local partners and the Friends of Coldbrook Cut, are working toward a larger vision: developing a rail-with-trail that will run through this portion of the neighborhood. In addition, a new Neighborhood Art Committee is forming to guide the artist selection process for future projects. This committee will include neighbors, local artists, and project supporters—ensuring the community’s voice is at the center of every decision.
“The Bradford Stairs project is a perfect example of how small changes can make a big impact,” said Rodney Cole, president, DTE Foundation. “This revitalization will reconnect neighbors, create safe and welcoming spaces and spark new energy for community projects and art initiatives. At the DTE Foundation, we’re committed to supporting efforts that strengthen neighborhoods and celebrate the people who make them vibrant. We’re excited to see Belknap’s vision come to life and proud to help shine a spotlight on this hidden gem.”
