While Michiganders may still be paying more at the grocery store or gasoline pumps, DTE is proud to share that the cost of natural gas is significantly less than what it was last leading into last winter – $0.310 per CCF this year compared to $0.523 per CCF last year. DTE Gas customers should expect lower bills throughout the winter months as DTE’s natural gas buying strategy and market forces have combined to keep prices affordable.

Protecting our customers from price spikes

No matter what’s going on in the natural gas market, DTE Gas’s purchasing and planning department maintains buying a steady supply of natural gas for you – buying throughout the year before gas is needed, and then stores it in naturally occurring rock formations. These reservoirs, located deep underground, hold the gas until you need it. Michigan’s geology makes it ideal for storing gas thanks to rock formations that previously held oil and gas, which has since been extracted.

Buying natural gas in advance helps stabilize the cost and insulates you from unexpected gas price changes. DTE does not mark up the price of natural gas, meaning you pay what DTE pays for the natural gas. While prices are changing, DTE’s buying and storage strategy is still one of the lowest natural gas prices in Michigan.

Reduce your energy usage – and save

You can lower your monthly bill further by following these energy efficiency tips:

  • Lower that thermostat: Setting your thermostat to 68 degrees Fahrenheit during winter months and turning it down a few extra degrees while you sleep can help you save up to 10% annually on energy costs.
  • Insulate windows, doors and pipes: You can save up to 10% on your energy bills annually by sealing air leaks and adding insulation. Install caulking and weatherstripping around doors and windows.
  • Give your furnace a boost: Keep your furnace working at peak efficiency by regularly changing air filters, cleaning the vents and getting routine tune-ups. If it’s older, consider a modern, high-efficiency model and save with rebates.
