As part of DTE’s effort to build a stronger grid, our crews have been working hard in the Nardin Park neighborhood of Detroit. DTE has been working to identify older circuits in the city which could benefit from upgrades, especially in the face of increasingly extreme weather in southeast Michigan.

On this day, multiple crews were near the intersection of Yosemite and Elmhurst working to harden the circuits that serve the Nardin Park neighborhood. This included replacing power poles when necessary and upgrading pole top equipment. Crews installed new fiber glass cross arms to replace old wooden ones, and new insulators for the overhead wires. This hardening work makes the equipment here more resilient to storms.

These infrastructure upgrades are essential to our goal of reducing outages and enhancing the grid’s resilience and reliability. Our commitment to customers is to reduce power outages by 30% and to cut outage durations in half by 2029.

By modernizing our equipment, DTE is fortifying the current system and preparing to meet the growing electricity demands of the future, like we’re seeing in Corktown and the West Riverfront. Our commitment to these projects guarantees that our customers will continue to receive the dependable service they rely on.

This upgrading work is part of DTE’s plan to build the grid of the future. That plan, now well underway, includes transitioning to a smart grid, upgrading existing infrastructure, rebuilding significant portions of the grid and trimming trees.
