1. Rotten Egg Smell
  • The most obvious sign of a natural gas leak is an odor like rotten eggs or a burnt match. We add a harmless substance to natural gas, so it stinks and is easier to detect. Follow your nose!

2. Leave the area and call 911

  • These are the first things you should always do, Get out and get safe. Call 911. Then call DTE Energy at 800.947.5000. Don’t use anything mechanical in your home prior to getting out. No light switch, no phones until in a safe area, and never try to locate the leak yourself. Our services on gas emergency calls are always free of charge, 24/7.

3. Detects CO gas

  • The symptoms of CO poisoning are similar to that of the flu: Breathlessness, dizziness, nausea, headache and even vomiting. It’s important to get out into fresh air and then call for medical assistance, if needed. Make sure you have CO detectors in all sleeping areas of your home and check the batteries at least every six months.

4. To ensure accurate readings and safety

  • Your meter is an important piece of equipment linking our gas distribution lines to your residence. In the winter, snow and ice buildup can cause problems so please keep it clear at all time, and never stack items like ladders, outdoor tools, etc. on or around your meter

5. Call 811

  • It’s always important to call MISS DIG at 811 or go online to missdig811.org at least three business days before undertaking any digging project on your property. It’s a free service that ensures all utilities like DTE and others can mark where there underground equipment is first, so that you don’t have a major problem with hitting a line or pipe. Remember, call MISS DIG at 811. It’s fast, free and it’s the law!
