As DTE Energy works to strengthen the grid, our team patrols and identifies equipment that may require upgrades or replacement.
For overhead lines, this work can include installing new power poles, cross arms, transformers, and even wiring. Plus, smart grid technology.
Recently, crews were busy working at the corner of Hamlin Road and Adams Road in Rochester Hills. Here, they installed a new piece of smart technology called a loop recloser. This piece of tech will help our crews be able to isolate an outage to speed up restoration times. This upgrade allows us to know exactly where the issue is and instead of shutting down a larger section of the grid, this will shut down only the section where the problem is. This is also much safer for our crews and customers with the ability to quickly and accurately power down at the right spot. These upgrades will lead to a better performing grid, especially during extreme weather situations.
Smart grid technology is essential for reducing outages and boosting the grid’s resilience and reliability. Our dedication to these improvements ensures that customers will continue to receive the reliable service they count on.
DTE Energy is dedicated to constructing a smarter, stronger and more resilient grid to enhance reliability. Our commitment to customers is to reduce power outages by 30% and to cut outage durations in half by 2029. We’re getting there by building the grid of the future. The plan, now well underway, includes transitioning to a smart grid, upgrading existing infrastructure, rebuilding significant portions of the grid and trimming trees.
