Scammers are always improving their technology to impersonate companies like DTE Energy and looking for new ways to trick our customers into financial scams. Please help keep your family, friends and community safe from scammers by sharing these vital reminders.

Scammers use scare tactics

The more aggressive the caller, the more skeptical you should be. DTE will never demand immediate payment or threaten shut off within a matter of hours.

Scammers demand specific forms of payment

DTE provides a variety of traditional payment options, but we never demand a specific type. Be especially cautious of requests for unusual forms of payment, such as cryptocurrency like Bitcoin; money-transferring apps like Zelle, Cash App or PayPal; or pre-paid debit cards like Green Dot.

Scammers request payment at your home

DTE will never collect payment at your home or business. We will also make every attempt to contact you before we visit your home for any purpose. Be sure to ask to see a DTE identification badge before allowing work at your house.

Scammers ask for personal information

Never give out personal information to someone you are unsure of over the phone, in person, through email or on the web.

Scammers take out ads in search engine listings to imitate DTE

Be careful what you click. Scammers are buying ad space in search engine listings to trick customers into giving up personal, identifiable information. Check the URL of anything you click on. If it doesn’t include dteenergy.com, it’s not a DTE website.

Here’s what you can do to avoid scams:

  • Don’t trust your caller ID – that’s the number your phone says is calling you. Scammers can use spoofing technology to make it look like a call is coming from DTE.
  • If someone at your door claims to be from DTE, ask to see a badge. All employees are required to have one and display it when asked.
  • If you get an unusual text message or email, do not click on any links or scan any barcodes it contains to make a payment.
  • Do not give out any personal information to anyone you are unsure of, including your credit card info, social security number or DTE account number.
  • Take note of the URL that’s listed before clicking on a sponsored ad in search engine listings. Although some scams show “DTE Energy” in the URL., the link is not directed to dteenergy.com, which is our official website.

Call 800.477.4747 if you suspect there’s a DTE imposter on the phone or at your door.
