To support our four-point plan to improve reliability, we are taking steps to implement smart grid technology throughout our service territory. Our transition to a smart grid focuses on automation to isolate outages and provide our field crews with specific damage locations to make faster repairs.
We have been installing smart grid technology in the Ann Arbor area has been a key area for this transition with the installation of reclosers, the equipment that communicates to our operating center so damage can be identified – and power rerouted – remotely. These reclosers are being installed on new poles with updated transformers to further improve reliability. Crews were recently in Ann Arbor installing one such pole to support a new residential development construction site.
This is just one aspect of our four-point plan to improve reliability for customers. The other steps we are taking include tree trimming, updating existing infrastructure, and rebuilding significant portions of the grid. You can read more about what each of these steps include, here.
