Have you ever wondered how your power lines are protected from lightning? We set up protective devices along power lines called lightning arresters. If a lightning strikes a power line during a storm, the lightning arrester will send a high-voltage current into the line to mitigate the impact of the lightning strike and help make sure you don’t lose power.

Lightning arresters vary in size based on the voltage of power in a given area. They’re spiral shaped, and you can spot them near the transformer. As part of our commitment to improving grid reliability, we’re working on upgrading lightning arresters in your neighborhood.

You may see more of our crews in the coming months as part of our accelerated electric reliability projects in your area, including more tree trimming and infrastructure updates. All these projects are underway to improve your service and reliability for the short- and long term.

Make sure to regularly check the Ann Arbor community page to learn more about what’s going on in your neighborhood. You can also follow DTE on Facebook and Twitter for even more updates and information.
