DTE Impact | Places | Your sneak peek at one of Detroit’s newest restaurants

The wait is over. Lumen Detroit, located on the edge of DTE Energy’s Beacon Park, debuts this week. The restaurant will initially be open for dinner only and is then expected to expand its menu for lunch and brunch later in the year.

The restaurant’s name, Lumen (Latin for light), not only connects the restaurant to DTE Energy and Beacon Park, but it also represents Detroit’s comeback and the surge of excitement that continues to build throughout downtown.

Restaurant veteran Norm LePage’s approachable and casual dining concept was inspired by Lumen’s proximity to Beacon Park in order to attract families coming to Detroit. A modern yet comfortable interior is surrounded by floor-to-ceiling glass panels that completely open during warm weather to an outdoor patio space.

A visible kitchen separates the bar area that features a variety of beverage choices, including seven craft beers on tap from LePage’s Griffin Claw Brewing Co. The cherry on top of a beautifully designed building sits a “green” rooftop patio and spectacular views of the city.

Lumen will not only serve a need to park visitors, but in true DTE fashion, it will also be one of the city’s greenest downtown restaurants with LED lighting and high-efficient HVAC equipment. From the name and sustainable roof, to the LEED-certified design and bulb-shaped salt and pepper shakers, DTE’s influence is felt throughout 4,000-square-foot building.

In order to remain relatable with park-goers, Executive Chef Gabby Milton from Birmingham’s Big Rock Chophouse who’s been helping to develop Lumen’s menu, says the food is “normal with a twist.” Lumen’s mix between Belgian-themed options and American fare includes snacks, soups and salads, and plates. The menu explains that it “mixes the comfort classics you love with a high level of seasonal creativity without all the ingredients nobody can pronounce!”
