Spring break is quickly approaching for thousands of students across Michigan. And while many might have thoughts of sunny days spent at the beach somewhere down south, there’s plenty to do and see right here in the Great Lakes state. If you’re looking for a fun and affordable staycation destination in Michigan, look no further than these four in-state gems.

The Motor City is roaring these days, and there’s plenty to do for a day, weekend or longer if you’re looking for unique experiences. For museums, the Detroit Institute of Art and Motown Museum are local favorites, or if you’re looking for something a little more fast-paced, a Red Wings or Pistons game at the newly-opened Little Caesars Arena makes for a great evening. Don’t forget about the bustling foodie seen in Motown, which includes the likes of Dime Store, Gold Cash Gold, Bobcat Bonnie’s just to name a few.

Frankenmuth may be as famous for its attractions as it is for its small-town charm. ‘Michigan’s Little Bavaria’ offers shopping, the state’s oldest brewery and of course, some of the best fudge in the state. Here you can take a horse-drawn carriage ride, zip down a waterslide at Zehnder’s Splash Village or visit Bronner’s, the world’s largest Christmas store all in one day. The only trouble you’ll have when visiting Frankenmuth is choosing between Zehnder’s or Bavarian Inn for that world-famous chicken dinner.

A trip north of the Mackinac Bridge offers more than just beautiful views. Home to Northern Michigan University, Marquette offers tours of the Marquette Harbor Lighthouse and Maritime Museum, Presque Isle Park and the iconic iron ore docks. Even more than a travel destination, Marquette has been previously identified as one of the 20 Best Places to Live by Outdoor Life Magazine.

Grand Rapids

Beer City, U.S.A! For college age students (or anyone older), Grand Rapids is a perfect place to enjoy a few days of fun. Grand Rapids boasts staples such as Founders Brewing Company, the original HopCat and Van Andel Arena while also offering family-friendly attractions like the Grand Rapids Children’s Museum and Frederik Meijer Gardens. Don’t miss a trip to Yesterdog while you’re in GR!

These are just four of the countless staycation destinations to enjoy in Michigan. Check out our other Your Neighborhood blogs for more great Michigan fun.
