During this difficult time, at DTE Energy we realize that our customers are depending on us now more than ever to provide safe and reliable power. We thank our frontline workers, who are committed to working throughout the pandemic to ensure you receive the reliable electricity you deserve.

The substation operations team is completing work on a major infrastructure project that will improve reliability for thousands of customers, including essential facilities such as Ascension St. John Hospital in Detroit. The Mack substation, which feeds electricity to the hospital, is getting a new transformer and other electrical work. It is part of the company’s ongoing efforts to enhance the energy grid, making it more resilient to better serve customers.

“The Mack project is a critical upgrade. It will allow us to modernize our infrastructure and make it more resilient, and adaptable to meet maintenance challenges,” said Lewis Hoskins, manager, substation operations.

The project will improve reliability for business and residential customers on the east side of Detroit. The project began in March 2020 and is expected to be completed this year.

During the pandemic, DTE will continue dozens of other targeted reliability projects in communities across our service area. Many of these projects focus on strengthening the infrastructure against severe weather to help reduce the length and number of outages in communities across the service territory.

While continuing to strengthen the infrastructure during the COVID-19 pandemic, DTE is taking extra measures to keep employees and customers safe. Employees in the field are wearing face masks – unless they are climbing utility poles, are in a bucket, are too close to the electrical equipment or if it would interfere with other safety requirements. In addition, employees and contractors have been trained on proper hygiene, washing equipment between jobs and social distancing.  DTE asks if people see crews in their neighborhoods, to please stay at least six feet back.
