Local businesses play a crucial role in our community. Whether it’s the local coffee shop, clothing line, restaurant or auto repair shop, local businesses can establish character throughout the neighborhood, help generate jobs and contribute to the local economy.

At DTE, we love our local businesses. That’s why more than 70 percent of our supplier spending goes to businesses within the Mitten. In fact, since 2010, we spent nearly $9.2 billion dollars with local suppliers and have created more than 24,000 jobs as a result.

We’ve also made it easy and affordable for a local business to reduce its carbon footprint through our MIGreenPower program. Launched in 2017, MIGreenPower helps business owners and residential customers support local wind and solar farms while also allowing us to work towards our goal of reducing carbon emissions by 80 percent by 2050.

You can support local businesses too! With July being Independent Retailer Month, we’ve listed several easy ways you can lift up a local business this year.

Shop local for the holidays

While the holidays may seem far away, Independent Retailer Month is a great reminder to shop locally during the giving season. It can be tempting for you to jump to the internet or head to the nearest outlet to pick out gifts. Instead, pick out a few items from a local shop. It’s a great way to find unique and thoughtful gifts that your friends and family are sure to love.

Eat locally

Eating at a local restaurant can be a tasty way to support your community. Independent restaurants allow you to experience unique menus and foods. By eating at these locations, you can also help maintain the charm that these restaurants bring to the area.

Leave a good review

Did you have a great experience while shopping at a store in your neighborhood? Write about it! Leaving a good review can encourage others to support the business too or even follow suit by leaving a comment themselves.

It’s always helpful to get the word out. Like leaving a review, sharing your local business experience on social media can help encourage your friends and family to support the same location.
