As our service territory energy needs keep evolving, we are always exploring innovative, new ways to help make our grid stronger for you. One recent example is with a pilot project we just completed in Romulus, strategically installing concrete poles for the first time in SE Michigan.
Twenty concrete poles were put in to replace their weathered, wooden predecessors along Van Born Road between Hannan and Cogswell. These new poles serve a three-part purpose:
- Improve reliability immediately in this area by upgrading equipment
- Get a sample sized understanding of how these poles will perform in our environment
- Prepare the system in this area for the new Mortan substation that will begin construction next year near the corner of Ecorse and Haggerty.
Why concrete poles?
- Longevity. Concrete is cheaper than steel and about equally as strong and long lasting.
- They are taller and stronger and more durable than wood. They can also carry heavier loads.
- Concrete poles are made with pre-drilled holes (see photos below) that will reduce the time it takes to install hardware attached to the concrete pole.
DTE is working to stay ahead of the consumption curve and jobs like this are just another example of how we strive to serve you with our energy.
You may see more of our crews in the coming months as part of our accelerated electric reliability projects in your area, including more tree trimming and infrastructure updates. All these projects are underway to improve your service and reliability for the short and long term.
