With the holiday season in full swing, everyone’s making cookies for parties, gift exchanges and snacks. When it comes to baking, there’s nothing better than the even heat and temperature control a natural gas oven offers.
Looking for a delicious sugar cookie recipe to try out in your natural gas oven? Here’s one that requires no chilling and bakes up perfectly for decorating.
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 2 cups (4 sticks) salted butter, softened
- 2 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 6 cups flour
Preheat your natural gas oven to 350 degrees.
Cream together the butter and sugar until just combined. Add the vanilla and eggs, then mix at low speed until fully blended. Add the flour, 1 to 2 cups at a time, until the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl.
Roll the dough out to a ¼-inch thickness and cut out cookies. Place on a parchment or silicone-lined cookie sheet.
Bake for 10-15 minutes or until cookies begin to turn golden brown around the edges.
Want to decorate? Try this royal icing recipe:
- 3 ounces egg whites
- 4 cups powdered confectioner’s sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Combine egg whites and vanilla in a large bowl and mix until frothy. Add sugar gradually, mixing on low, until combined and the mixture is shiny. Turn mixer up to high and beat until stiff, glossy peaks form, about 5-7 minutes. At this point, you can add food coloring to tint the icing or use immediately. Transfer icing to a piping bag or zip-top bag with one corner removed to pipe icing onto cookies. Icing will dry to solid finish.
