The latest art installation at Beacon Park Detroit is one you don’t want to miss!  \nWe are thrilled to host Los Trompos\, an internationally traveling art installation\, starting on our Cinco de Mayo celebration. Eight “spinning-top” sculptures from Mexico City will call Beacon Park its home for over a month.  \nWe hope to see you having fun out in the park — share you photos with us by tagging Beacon Park Detroit!  \nThis collection of eight three-dimensional\, larger-than-life “spinning tops” will further transform Beacon Park into vibrant space. Created by Héctor Esrawe and Ignacio Cadena\, Los Trompos weaves together Mexican tradition\, culture\, architecture\, and art. Only when visitors engage with the installations\, working together to spin the tops on their base and spinning along with them\, does this art come to life. \nBased on the concept and construction of the traditional toy\, Los Trompos is an interactive piece that puts a new spin on the work of Mexican artisans. As Esrawe said\, “We wanted to talk about the traditions and skills of the craftsmen in Mexico\, as an inheritance of our culture. We like the idea of translating these techniques into new symbols.” Originally commissioned by the High Museum of Art in Atlanta\, Georgia\, Los Trompos has offered a transformative experience in Houston and Scottsdale. Beacon Park is thrilled to partner with Esrawe to now bring Los Trompos to Detroit for all to experience the magic of these spinning tops. \nLos Trompos cultivates an environment where people\, from a variety of backgrounds\, can connect\, relax\, and play. Jazz at DTE’s Beacon Park is sponsored by the DTE Beacon Park Foundation\, curated by the Detroit Jazz Festival Foundation and produced by the Downtown Detroit Partnership. \nThe Alvin Waddles concert will be a tribute to Leonard Bernstein. Waddles takes you on a jazzy journey through this American-born\, but citizen of the world’s works. The set will include his early academic compositions and Broadway hits like “On the Town” and “Wonderful Town”\, his operetta “Candide”\, the iconic masterpiece\, “West Side Story” and his ground breaking\, “Mass”. \nThe entire Jazz at DTE’s Beacon Park series is free to all and will feature local and national jazz artists with a Detroit Jazz Festival Foundation history. This will be a rich musical experience that shouldn’t be missed!

With electric performances\, Moon Taxi has performed at multiple festivals including Bonnaroo\, Coachella\, Governor’s Ball\, Hangout Festival\, Lollapalooza\, Austin City Limits\, and Outside Lands. Their music has also been featured in multiple TV and commercial placements including BMW\, NFL\, HBO Sports\, and more. \nOpening the night is The War and Treaty. This couple\, Michael Trotter Jr. and Tanya Blount-Trotter\, share their incredible story through a blend of folk\, gospel\, and soul. They live between Albion\, Michigan and Nashville\, Tennessee. Beacon Park is one stop on their tour since the release of their debut studio album\, Healing Tide\, in August 2018. \nThe June 15th show is the first of Beacon Park’s FREE summer concert series invites music lovers to experience international talent and shop under the lights at the Night Market.
