Paperwork? Check. Employee badge? Check. Spending the afternoon with 300 fellow new employees helping to beautify a Detroit neighborhood? Check. It was all a part of FUEL, DTE’s onboarding program that included an afternoon of volunteerism in Detroit.           

Hundreds of new employees and interns spent the afternoon in DTE’s Caniff Neighborhood on June 19 working with local community organizations and nonprofits to cleanup and beautify the area.

Home to DTE’s Caniff Service Center, the North End neighborhood is located between Woodward Avenue and I-75 just north of Midtown. DTE’s Public Affairs Neighborhoods team has big plans for this area, including neighborhood beautification, business support, improved safety, increasing mobility options, placemaking with the neighborhood’s current assets, education and employment.

For FUEL, DTE partnered with Habitat for Humanity to bring in volunteers who worked on projects such as:

  • Improving Bradby Park, including basketball courts, gazebo, bleachers and community center
  • Beautification efforts of select homes
  • Clearing debris in alleys and abandoned blocks

FUEL introduces DTE’s new team members to DTE’s culture of volunteerism and community-focused corporate responsibility, giving participants an opportunity to directly serve residents in Detroit. During this event, several DTE team members from our Caniff facility worked alongside neighborhood residents to improve the area.

But this is just the beginning! DTE has a long-term commitment to continue to work alongside residents to collaborate in making life better through new growth and development.
