This story is the third installment of a series to update you on our crew’s progress in building two new DTE substations in Detroit: Promenade and Islandview.

DTE crews have filled both substation sites up with MDOT Class II sand and tested it for compaction. What is “compaction?” The process of evaluating and adjusting the density of a substance until it is determined to be a suitable foundation to build upon.

Contractor crews have also begun below grade work at both sites. “Below grade” refers to any portion of a structure that is below the ground. For example, at the Promenade substation site, crews have recently installed underground power lines, finalizing the electric system which will energize the future substation structure.

As energy use evolves over time, these new substations will improve service for the community by providing additional power capacity, increasing reliability and reducing the likelihood of power outages.
