For the eleventh consecutive year, our company has partnered with Child & Family Services of Michigan to deliver Christmas gifts to infants, children, teenagers and adults with disabilities who reside in foster care. Through the annual Operation Good Cheer drive, employees annually sponsor more than 800 children and adults by purchasing and wrapping items from their wish list, making each Christmas brighter.
“This event brings our family closer together and helps us put aside our own challenges and stress,” said Lynn Cobb, operations analyst, Gas Operations. “After reading the children’s profiles, we quickly realized our troubles are nothing in comparison.”
DTE Energy first became involved in Operation Good Cheer in 2007, filling a small conference room with presents for 75 children and adults. Today, employees used the DTE headquarters lobby to collect and load over 2,000 gifts into a semi-truck, making us the largest corporate sponsor of Operation Good Cheer in the state of Michigan.
The 2,000 gifts collected represented 10 percent of the total gifts processed at the Oakland County International Airport. To honor that accomplishment, Meijer provided its own 53-foot semi for the company, which is normally assigned to a Ford location.
“This incredible effort relies on over 400 employee volunteers representing every department in the company, and would not be where it is today without their hard work and dedication,” said Anita Springer, manager, Center of Excellence. “In fact, the logistics company who provided us the truck told us there’s no way we’ll fit that many gifts onto one truck…to which I replied, you don’t know DTE.”
Child & Family Services of Michigan started the holiday gift-giving program in 1971 to help infants, children, teenagers and adults with disabilities have a merrier Christmas. More than 5,000 kids are provided with gifts each year to open Christmas morning, and more than 92,000 people in Michigan’s foster community have had their holiday wishes granted since the program’s inception.
