DTE Energy launched the 2017 Business Pride contest asking Michigan-based companies to tell us why they are proud of their business. And how a $5,000 DTE energy makeover would improve their business further. We were astounded by the entries and the passion shared by business owners.

“This is the third year for our Business Pride contest and I love reading the submissions from proud businesses across the state,” said Julie Maher, energy efficiency manager, DTE Energy. “We want to support Michigan businesses, and finding ways to help them optimize their energy use and equipment, can save them operational expenses in the long run.”

The 2017 grand prize winner is Tall Oaks Kennel of Whitmore Lake. They will receive a $5,000 makeover from DTE along with 10 runner-up entries who will receive an energy assessment and upgrades from a DTE energy specialist.

Tall Oaks is a staple business in the Whitmore Lake community that provides pet boarding, grooming and a rescue home for animals in need. Owner Elaine Perkins built the business over the years based on her passion for caring for animals.

“I was eager to enter the contest because DTE Energy is the expert and improving my business to deliver the best service and experience to my customers is my focus,” shared Perkins.

Perkins is looking forward to implementing energy-efficient updates at her business and optimizing her equipment. Due to the growth of her business, she recently upgraded to a commercial-grade washer and dryer to manage the laundry. Through her energy assessment, Perkins will be able to optimize her hot water heating usage and better manage her energy bill. Upgrades to lighting are also on her list of improvements.
