We all have at least one. The Christmas sweater that hangs in the back of our closet and remains unworn because it’s, well, ugly. Mark your calendar for Dec. 9 because that’s the day your ugly sweater could help you become part of a world record.
DTE Energy’s Beacon Park and UglyChristmasSweater.com are chasing a world record, hoping to bring 3,500 people together in the Detroit park to win the Guinness Book of World Records TM title as the largest gathering of people wearing Christmas sweaters. The event is scheduled for Dec. 9 at 6:30 p.m. and will be followed by a silent disco – ugly Christmas sweater edition, of course – in the park’s Winter Lodge. Partygoers donning headphones and holiday sweaters will dance the night away from 7 p.m. to midnight while DJs from iHeart Detroit radio stations Channel 955, WJLB and WNIC will simultaneously spin three genres of music on separate channels. The DTE Energy Foundation is sponsoring the festivities while UglyChristmasSweater.com is supporting the world record attempt.
“My brother Mark and I are so excited to bring a Guinness World Records™ title attempt to the city of Detroit,” said UglyChristmasSweater.com co-owner Fred Hajjar. “We hope the community will embrace the holiday spirit and join us on December 9 at Beacon Park to shatter the previous record.”
