When people think about careers with DTE Energy, there are many who instantly think of linemen and linewomen who help to keep homes powered across Michigan. However, this is just the tip of the iceberg, as there are a number of careers within DTE Energy that enable us to serve both our customers and employees on a day-to-day basis. In the interview below, we speak with Karen Personett, Manager of Wellness and Health Promotion at DTE Energy.
Empowering Michigan (EM): What do you do in your position as Manager of Wellness and Health Promotion at DTE Energy?
PERSONETT: The driving mission of our well-being program, Energize Your Life, lies in “empowering individuals to live with positive energy, good health and passion for life by fostering a lifelong commitment in physical, emotional, social and financial well-being.” In my position, I create strategy that enables a healthy workforce. My team and I use data, such the benchmark performance of DTE Energy and organizations like ours, as well as factors such as employee productivity, safety and recuperation time after an illness, to direct and determine the focus of our strategy. This helps us to highlight the “Value of Investment”- the VOI- of investing in our employees.
EM: How does your position play into the larger mission of DTE Energy?
PERSONETT: At DTE Energy, we aspire to be a force for growth and prosperity in the communities we serve, including for our employees. DTE Energy also strives to be the best operated energy company in North America in regard to employee safety and engagement. This shapes the mission of our Energize Your Life program and allows my team to play an active role in helping our company achieve those goals. We desire to create a supportive environment that promotes the positive health of our employees, especially since they spend a good amount of their time here. Everything we do drives toward our mission. This means that, in the dimensions of physical, emotional, social and financial well-being, our efforts are to provide a workplace culture that aligns with our mission statement to empower our employees to be their best. We want to keep our healthy employees that way, while helping our employees on their health journey evolve to a higher level of well-being.
If you think about it, employees with holistic well-being safer because they are more alert and aware of their surroundings. They are in better physical health and less susceptible to injuries that could result from overexertions, repetitive motion or strain. By managing stress levels, employees are typically more engaged.
Our “Energize Your Life” program is an enabler, it gives the engine of our company, our employees, the power they need to be healthy. If we take care of our engine, they are enabled to live healthier and safer in their communities, with the people they love.
EM: What are you most proud of when it comes to your career with DTE Energy?
PERSONETT: I am most proud of DTE’s aspiration of being a force for growth in our community. It makes me proud that our Chairman and CEO, Gerry Anderson, understands the value of personal well-being and keeping our employees healthy as a function of our business’ health. The small, everyday successes we hear about from our employees makes it all worth it. I’m proud to be part of that!
