For many, Easter Weekend is not just a religious holiday, but also a time to bring the family together and signal the (un)official start of spring. While this is the ideal time to appreciate the beauty of the outdoors, there are also plenty of organized holiday events to join all across the state. These local get-togethers are a chance to get out and dazzle the kids with bright and colorful activities, as well as bring the family closer to the community. Plus, you can look forward to not spending hours at the store getting the perfect treats and craft supplies!
Outside of your family’s own time-honored traditions, if you’re feeling adventurous this Easter, grab your keys and check out any of these entertaining – and kid-friendly! – options:
Where: Detroit Zoo
When: April 14 and 15; 9am-3pm
With your admission to the Detroit Zoo, you and your family get a free pass to this annual celebration that starts with a golden egg hunt with 100+ eggs scattered throughout the Zoo each day. Staying true to the animal theme, you can also get face “whisker” paintings, then slide over to Funny Bunny Games and follow that up with a photoshoot with the one and only Easter Bunny. The fun doesn’t stop there: The Amazing Clark magic show and the “Bunnyville Follies” musical will keep the whole family laughing and clapping all day long. Pro tip: Bring canned or nonperishable food for the Gleaners Community Food Bank drive and get a reduced admission price.
What: Easter Holiday Brunch
Where: W.K. Kellogg Manor House (Hickory Corners)
When: April 16; 10:15am-1:30pm
This historic mansion, former summer home for the Kellogg family, is a stellar place to spend Easter Sunday if you’re looking to go the more formal route. Enjoy breathtaking views of Gull Lake while savoring a full brunch spread that includes made-to-order omelet bar and lemon poppyseed pancakes, and lunch dishes like field greens salad, grilled flank steak, and smoked ham. If you aren’t too full after the meal, take the family for a walk down to the Kellogg Bird Sanctuary and enjoy to the sensational sounds of spring together.
What: Mountain Road Egg Hunt
Where: Crystal Mountain (Thompsonville)
When: April 15 at 10am
When it comes down to it, all that the littlest members of your family really care about is tracking down those eggs and prizes. If they’re up for an added challenge, pack your car and drive up to Crystal Mountain for an ‘egg’stravaganza like none other. Your kids will don their adventurer’s hat as they comb the winding trails for more than 3,000 eggs! This is a great – if not, sneaky – way to get in tons of family exercise to kick off the season. After high-fiving the Easter Bunny, you can enjoy lunch at the Inn Lounge and even stay the night to enjoy the Easter Buffet on Sunday morning.
There are as many Easter events as there are eggs to hunt down—this rundown is just the beginning. To find more celebrations closer to your neighborhood, check out Pure Michigan’s directory.
